Overview
Rationalism is the philosophical tradition that holds reason to be the primary source and test of knowledge. Where empiricism traces all ideas to sensory experience, rationalism insists that certain fundamental truths are known through reason alone, independently of what the senses deliver. The tradition is most strongly associated with the great philosophers of seventeenth-century continental Europe, above all René Descartes, Baruch Spinoza, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, whose shared commitment to reason, innate ideas, and the deductive method earned them the collective label of the continental rationalists.
Rationalism takes mathematics as its model. The certainty of geometry, which proceeds from self-evident axioms by rigorous deduction to necessary conclusions, seemed to these thinkers the ideal of all genuine knowledge. They sought to extend this model to metaphysics, ethics, and the natural world, holding that the deepest structure of reality is intelligible to a disciplined reason. The Stanford Encyclopedia notes that the contrast between rationalism and empiricism, though a later historian's simplification, captures a real and enduring disagreement about where knowledge comes from and how far it can reach. Historical Development
Rationalism has ancient roots. Plato's theory of recollection held that learning is the recovery of knowledge the soul possessed before birth, and the Euclidean geometry prized in antiquity supplied the ideal of deductive certainty that later rationalists would revive. But rationalism as a defined philosophical movement emerged in the seventeenth century, in the work of Descartes. His Discourse on the Method (1637) and Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) established the program: find an indubitable foundation through methodical doubt, then build knowledge by deductive steps as rigorous as those of mathematics.
Spinoza radicalized Descartes's project. His Ethics, written in geometrical order with axioms, definitions, and propositions, attempted to deduce the whole of reality, God, mind, body, and human bondage, from first principles. Where Descartes had left mind and body as distinct substances, Spinoza argued for a single substance, Deus sive Natura, God or Nature, of which thought and extension are attributes. Leibniz, working independently, developed a different rationalist metaphysics grounded in his principle of sufficient reason, the claim that nothing happens without a reason why it should be so rather than otherwise, and in his doctrine of monads, the simple substances that compose reality.
The contrast with empiricism defines the period. Locke, Berkeley, and Hume, writing in Britain, denied innate ideas and argued that all knowledge derives from experience. Hume's skepticism about causation and induction was widely read as a reductio of the empiricist premises, and Kant famously credited Hume with interrupting his dogmatic slumber. The defining thesis of rationalism is that reason, rather than sense experience, is the primary source of genuine knowledge. That the interior angles of a triangle equal two right angles is not learned by measuring triangles, which are always imperfect, but by understanding the concept. Innate Ideas
Central to classical rationalism is the doctrine of innate ideas. Descartes held that certain ideas, the idea of God, of the self, and of mathematical truths, are placed in the mind by God and do not derive from experience. They are not learned but discovered, brought to explicit awareness by reflection. This doctrine was the principal target of Locke's attack in the Essay, which argued that the mind is a tabula rasa and that all ideas come from sensation and reflection. The debate over innate ideas became the central battleground between rationalism and empiricism. The concept of a priori knowledge, formalized most clearly by Kant, descends directly from the rationalists' conviction that reason has access to truths that experience can neither ground nor refute. This remains a live question in contemporary epistemology: whether there is substantive a priori knowledge, and if so, what it consists of.
The Deductive Method and the Mathematical Model
The rationalists modeled philosophy on mathematics. Descartes's four rules of method prescribed clear and distinct ideas, analysis into simples, ordered synthesis, and complete review, the very procedure of geometrical proof. Spinoza wrote his Ethics in geometrical order, deducing propositions from definitions and axioms. Leibniz dreamed of a universal calculus, a characteristica universalis, in which all reasoning could be reduced to calculation. Rationalism's influence extends far beyond the seventeenth century. Kant's critical philosophy was forged in direct response to the rationalists and empiricists: he accepted that there is a priori knowledge but denied that pure reason can reach the supersensible truths, God, freedom, immortality, that the rationalists claimed. German Idealism, in Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, revived the rationalist confidence that reason can grasp the whole, transforming the static deductive system into a historical dialectic. In the twentieth century, rationalist themes reappeared in the analytic tradition's interest in a priori knowledge, logical necessity, and the relation of mind to meaning.
