Biography

Amos Nathan Tversky was born on March 16, 1937, in Haifa, then in British Palestine. His father was a veterinarian and his mother a member of the Knesset; the family was cultivated and politically engaged. Tversky studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earning a bachelor's degree in 1961, and went on to a doctorate at the University of Michigan, where he received his PhD in psychology in 1965. He was drawn early to the study of judgment — how people evaluate probability and make decisions under uncertainty — and his doctoral work already displayed the combination of mathematical rigor and conceptual daring that would define his career.

He returned to the Hebrew University, where in 1969 he met Daniel Kahneman. Their collaboration began with a seminar exercise and quickly became one of the most productive partnerships in the history of the behavioral sciences. Over two decades they produced a stream of papers — "Judgment under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases" (1974), "Prospect Theory" (1979), and many others — that together founded the modern study of decision-making. Tversky later moved to Stanford University in 1978, where he worked with students including Eldar Shafir and Paul Slovic, and continued to produce foundational work until his death from metastatic melanoma on June 2, 1996, at the age of fifty-nine. He did not live to see Kahneman receive the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for work done jointly with him.

Historical Background

The classical theory of rational choice, inherited from Bernoulli and axiomatized by von Neumann and Morgenstern, held that people choose by maximizing expected utility, weighing outcomes by their objective probabilities. The same assumption underwrote neoclassical economics and the formal epistemology of Bayesianism. Tversky and Kahneman's research program challenged this from the ground up: not by armchair argument but by controlled experiments showing that people's judgments and choices deviate from the normative model in systematic, predictable ways.

Heuristics and biases. Tversky and Kahneman argued that people judge under uncertainty using a small set of heuristics — fast, economical rules of thumb — which are usually useful but produce characteristic, systematic errors. The availability heuristic estimates frequency by how easily examples come to mind; the representativeness heuristic judges likelihood by resemblance to a prototype, generating the conjunction fallacy (the famous "Linda" case: people judge it more probable that Linda is a feminist bank teller than that she is a bank teller); the anchoring effect shows judgments being pulled toward an initial value.

Prospect theory. In 1979 Tversky and Kahneman replaced expected utility theory with prospect theory, a descriptive model of choice under risk with three central claims: people evaluate outcomes relative to a reference point (gains and losses, not final states); loss aversion — losses loom larger than corresponding gains; and probabilities are weighted nonlinearly, overweighting small probabilities and underweighting large ones. The theory explains the "Allais paradox," the endowment effect, and why insurance and lotteries coexist.

Framing. The same choice, described differently, produces different choices: a surgery framed as "90% survival" is accepted more readily than one framed as "10% mortality." Framing effects show that preference is not a fixed internal ordering but is constructed in context — a result with devastating implications for the rational-agent model and profound consequences for how information is presented in medicine, law, and policy.

The "Linda problem" and the conjunction fallacy forced epistemologists to ask whether probabilistic coherence is truly a requirement of rationality, and the heuristics-and-biases program inspired both the "fast and frugal" defense of heuristics (Gigerenzer's critique) and the dual-process theories of System 1 and System 2 thinking popularized by Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow.

Tversky himself resisted grand pronouncements; his method was the careful experiment and the elegant model. But the cumulative effect of his work is philosophical: it replaced the idealized rational agent with a realistic account of human judgment, and it demonstrated that the errors of reason are not random noise but the systematic signature of the mind's design — the empirical counterpart of confirmation bias and the cognitive biases that critical thinking must train us to recognize.

Tversky's heuristics-and-biases program is the scientific basis for the study of cognitive biases and confirmation bias. It bears directly on decision-making and rationality, and it intersects with inductive reasoning, since heuristics are inferences under uncertainty. His collaboration with Kahneman is the defining partnership of behavioral decision science, and his results challenge the classical ideal of reason in epistemology and the philosophy of science.
