Biography

Bertrand Arthur William Russell was born in 1872 at Trelleck, Monmouthshire, into one of the most distinguished aristocratic families in Britain. His grandfather, Lord John Russell, had twice served as Prime Minister, and the Russell family occupied a central place in the British political and intellectual establishment. Russell's parents died when he was very young, and he was raised by his grandmother, who instilled in him a rigorous moral seriousness and a commitment to free thought. He was educated at home by tutors and entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1890, where he studied mathematics and philosophy under Alfred North Whitehead and George Edward Moore.
