Biography

Charles Sanders Peirce was born on September 10, 1839, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, into one of the most intellectually distinguished families in America. His father, Benjamin Peirce, was a professor of mathematics and astronomy at Harvard University and one of the foremost American mathematicians of the nineteenth century. Benjamin Peirce was a demanding father who supervised his son's education with extraordinary rigor, requiring the young Charles to memorize passages of logic and mathematics and engaging him in intellectual exercises that would have daunted most adults.
