Biography
Francis Bacon (1561–1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, essayist, and advocate of a new method for the sciences. Born in London to Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and Lady Anne Cooke Bacon, he was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he entered at the age of twelve and came away convinced that the prevailing system of Aristotelian logic was barren for the discovery of new knowledge. After Cambridge he read law at Gray's Inn and built a career at the bar, entering Parliament in 1584.
Bacon's public life was one of both high achievement and serious reverses. Under James I he rose rapidly, serving as Solicitor General, Attorney General, and finally Lord Chancellor and Baron Verulam; he was created Viscount St Albans in 1621. In that same year he was impeached for corruption in office, pleaded guilty, and was stripped of his offices and fined, though he was soon released from imprisonment. His final years, spent in retirement, were his most philosophically productive, and it was during this period that he completed or drafted most of the works on which his philosophical reputation rests.
Bacon died in 1626, according to the account given by his chaplain William Rawley, after catching a chill while experimenting with the preservation of meat by cold—a death that, if apocryphal in detail, fittingly reflects his lifelong insistence that knowledge is won through direct engagement with nature rather than through disputation.
Philosophy
Bacon's central philosophical project was the Great Instauration, a comprehensive plan for the reform of human knowledge that he announced in 1620 and pursued across a series of works. The premise of the plan was that the inherited learning of his time, dominated by Aristotelian logic and scholastic disputation, had failed to produce works of use. Bacon argued that knowledge had become a means of contest rather than a means of discovery, and that what was needed was a new instrument—a novum organum—to replace the syllogistic logic of Aristotle's Organon.
The heart of this new instrument is the inductive method. Where Aristotelian demonstration moves from assumed universals down to particular conclusions, Bacon proposed that the mind should rise from particular observations to general laws, but only by a disciplined procedure that guards against hasty generalization. The investigator must assemble systematic tables of presences, absences, and degrees of the property under investigation, exclude rival explanations, and only then allow a provisional "interpretation of nature" to emerge. Bacon insisted that genuine induction is not simple enumeration but a method of exclusion and gradual ascent, designed to track the hidden "forms" that underlie natural processes.
A distinctive and influential part of Bacon's philosophy is his diagnosis of the idols of the mind—the systematic tendencies that distort human cognition and obstruct the reading of nature. He identified four kinds: the Idols of the Tribe, rooted in human nature itself, such as the tendency to see order where there is none; the Idols of the Cave, rooted in the individual's particular education, temperament, and experience; the Idols of the Marketplace, arising from the imprecision and distortion of language; and the Idols of the Theater, the false philosophical systems inherited from tradition, which stage fictitious worlds. The task of method, for Bacon, is partly to compensate for these distortions, since the unaided mind cannot be trusted to read nature aright.
Bacon also redefined the aim of knowledge. Against the contemplative ideal of the ancient schools, he insisted that "knowledge is power" (scientia potentia est): the purpose of knowing nature is to master it for the relief of the human estate. This did not mean mere utility without understanding, but rather that genuine understanding would be measured by its capacity to produce works. The fusion of empirical method, cognitive humility, and humanitarian purpose marks Bacon as a founder of the modern conception of science.
Major Works
Bacon's philosophical writings form a deliberately planned sequence within the Great Instauration. The Advancement of Learning (1605), written in English, is the first part: a survey and defense of all branches of knowledge, in which he catalogs the defects of existing learning and identifies the gaps that future inquiry must fill. He later expanded and translated it into Latin as De Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), the definitive version of the first part of the Instauration.
The Novum Organum (1620) is the second and most famous part, setting out the new inductive method and the doctrine of the idols. Its frontispiece depicts a ship passing the Pillars of Hercules, symbolizing the voyage beyond the boundaries of ancient knowledge. The New Atlantis (1627, posthumous), a fable of a scientific society called Salomon's House, imagined the institutional organization of cooperative research and proved prophetic of the later scientific academy. Bacon also wrote the Essays (1597, expanded in 1612 and 1625), brief meditations on civil and moral subjects that remain among the most admired prose works in English. The standard scholarly edition of his works is that of James Spedding, Robert Leslie Ellis, and Douglas Denon Heath (1857–1874), commonly cited as "Spedding."
