Falsifiability is the property of a theory being open to refutation by experience. A statement is falsifiable if there is some possible observation, or some conceivable state of affairs, that would show it to be false. "All swans are white" is falsifiable: a single black swan refutes it. "Either it will rain tomorrow or it will not" is not: no observation could possibly show it false. The concept has a double function. First, it is a criterion of meaning and of science: Karl Popper proposed it as the demarcation line between scientific and non-scientific claims, replacing the verificationists' demand that claims be confirmable. Second, it describes the logic of scientific progress: science advances not by accumulating confirmations but by proposing bold conjectures and then attempting, through experiment, to falsify them. A theory that survives severe testing is not thereby proven true — it is merely corroborated, for now.

Karl Popper formulated falsifiability in the 1930s, reacting against logical positivism's verification principle, which held that a statement is meaningful only if experience can verify it. Popper saw that universal laws — the heart of science — can never be verified by any finite set of observations, and that the pretensions of theories like Freudian psychoanalysis and Marxism to explain everything were precisely their weakness: theories that can explain anything, and rule nothing out, are not empirical. In The Logic of Scientific Discovery, he argued that a theory is scientific only if it prohibits something — if it specifies conditions under which it would be false. The asymmetry is logical: no number of white swans proves "all swans are white," but one black swan refutes it. Falsifiability makes scientific claims vulnerable, and vulnerability is their strength. The criterion has been debated ever since. Thomas Kuhn argued that normal science does not proceed by falsification — paradigms are protected by auxiliary assumptions and are abandoned only in crises. W. V. O. Quine's holism suggested that any single statement can be saved by adjusting the web of belief. Paul Feyerabend argued that strict falsificationism would have killed off promising theories in their infancy. These criticisms have refined rather than destroyed the core insight: testability against experience is what separates science from dogma.

This is why falsifiability connects to fallibility and provisionality: a falsifiable belief is one whose holder has admitted, in advance, that it might be false, and who has specified what would count against it. That specification is the purest expression of intellectual humility — it is the opposite of the dogmatic mind, which defines its beliefs so vaguely that nothing could ever count against them. The wisdom of falsifiability is thus practical: before committing to a belief, ask what evidence would change your mind. If the answer is "nothing," the belief is not knowledge but identity, and it is held at the cost of truth.

Modern Relevance

Falsifiability remains the most widely used tool for distinguishing science from pseudoscience — in medicine (homeopathy and astrology are not falsifiable in their standard claims; drug effects are), in climate science (specific predictions are constantly tested), and in the evaluation of psychological and economic theories. The replication crisis in psychology was a crisis of falsifiability: results that were never subjected to severe testing turned out to be false. In everyday reasoning, the concept has a direct application: claims that predict nothing and can explain everything — conspiracy theories, horoscopes, "just world" narratives — fail the falsifiability test, and treating them as knowledge is a category error. Falsifiability is also a guide to honesty in public discourse: stating one's position so that it could be refuted is the difference between assertion and argument.

Falsifiability presupposes testability — the possibility of checking claims against observation — and is the engine of verification in its Popperian form. It embodies fallibility and yields provisionality, since no theory is ever finally established. Falsifiability is the logical core of the scientific method and of critical thinking about empirical claims.
