Biography

Daniel Clement Dennett III was born on March 28, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts, into a family with deep intellectual and artistic roots. His father, Daniel Clement Dennett Jr., was a historian of Islamic culture who served as a cryptanalyst during World War II and later taught at the American University of Beirut. His mother, Ruth Marjorie Leck, was an editor and a woman of wide cultural interests. The Dennett household was one in which ideas mattered, and young Daniel absorbed a love of inquiry from an early age. When his father took a position at the American University in Beirut, Dennett spent part of his childhood in Lebanon, an experience that gave him early exposure to different cultures and ways of thinking — an exposure that would later inform his insistence that philosophy must take seriously the diversity of human perspectives.

Dennett's formal education began at Phillips Exeter Academy, the prestigious preparatory school in New Hampshire, where he developed an interest in philosophy and science. The Intentional Stance

When we encounter a complex system — a human being, a chess-playing computer, a thermostat, or even a biological cell — we can adopt one of three distinct stances toward it. The physical stance predicts the system's behavior by using the laws of physics and the system's physical constitution. The design stance predicts behavior by appealing to the system's design or function: we know what a clock is supposed to do, so we predict that it will tell the time without needing to know the physical details of its mechanism. The intentional stance predicts behavior by treating the system as a rational agent with beliefs, desires, and other mental states, and by assuming that it will act rationally given those states.

The intentional stance is not a claim about what the system "really" believes or desires. It is a predictive strategy, a tool for understanding and anticipating the behavior of systems that are too complex for the physical or design stances to be practical. When I play chess against a computer, I do not need to know the details of its circuitry (physical stance) or the specifics of its search algorithm (design stance) to predict its moves. I simply assume that it "wants" to win and "believes" that certain moves will lead to victory, and I predict its behavior accordingly. If this strategy reliably predicts the computer's behavior, then the computer genuinely has beliefs and desires in the only sense that matters — the functional sense that makes the intentional stance work. Dennett calls systems that are usefully predictable from the intentional stance "intentional systems," and he argues that the attribution of mental states is justified precisely when and where the intentional stance succeeds.

This position has profound implications. It means that mental states are not inner objects or private experiences but patterns of behavior that are visible from the intentional stance. It means that the question of whether a system "really" has beliefs is not a deep metaphysical question but a pragmatic one: does treating the system as if it has beliefs help us predict and explain its behavior? The Multiple Drafts Model

In Consciousness Explained (1991), Dennett turned his attention to the problem of consciousness — the most recalcitrant problem in the philosophy of mind and the one that had eluded the naturalistic approach he favored. The book is a sweeping, ambitious, and deliberately provocative work that attacks what Dennett calls the "Cartesian Theater" model of consciousness: the intuitive picture according to which there is a central place in the brain where information from the senses is brought together and presented to a conscious observer, the self. There is no single, definitive version of the stream of consciousness; there are only the various drafts that exist at various times in various parts of the brain.

The multiple drafts model has several important consequences. First, it dissolves the problem of the "self" as an inner observer. If there is no Cartesian Theater, then there is no homunculus inside the head watching the show, and the question of what the self is becomes a question about the brain's capacity to represent its own activities — a capacity that is itself the product of evolutionary and cultural processes, not a metaphysical given. Second, it challenges the idea that conscious experience has a precise temporal structure. Dennett uses a series of ingenious thought experiments — including the color phi phenomenon and the cutaneous "rabbit" illusion — to argue that the apparent temporal ordering of conscious experience is a post hoc construction, not a faithful record of when events actually occurred. The brain, on this view, edits the temporal sequence of experience after the fact, and the resulting "stream of consciousness" is a useful fiction rather than a literal record.

Third, and most controversially, the multiple drafts model denies that there are "qualia" — intrinsic, ineffable qualities of subjective experience that are accessible only from the first-person perspective. Dennett argues that the very concept of qualia is incoherent: if we try to specify what a quale is, we find ourselves either describing a functional property of the brain (which is public and third-person accessible) or appealing to a mysterious intrinsic property that cannot be specified, tested, or meaningfully discussed. The hard problem of consciousness, David Chalmers argued, is the problem of explaining why physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective experience at all. Dennett's response is that the hard problem is a pseudo-problem, generated by a confused philosophical picture. Darwin's Dangerous Idea
