Biography
John Rogers Searle was born on July 31, 1932, in Denver, Colorado, into a family of physicians and academics. His father, G.W. Searle, was an eye surgeon and his mother, Hester Beck Searle, came from a family with strong ties to the medical profession. The Searle household valued education and intellectual achievement, and young John was encouraged from an early age to pursue his interests wherever they led. He attended local schools in Denver before enrolling at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he began his university education in 1949 at the age of seventeen. Initially, Searle intended to study medicine, following the family tradition, but he quickly found himself drawn to philosophy. Berkeley would remain his academic home for more than fifty years. The Berkeley philosophy department in the 1960s was one of the most distinguished in the world, home to figures such as Paul Feyerabend, Charles Parsons, and (later) John Searle himself. The Chinese Room Argument
The Chinese Room argument is Searle's most famous contribution to the philosophy of mind and one of the most widely discussed thought experiments in the history of philosophy. It was first presented in his 1980 paper "Minds, Brains, and Programs," published in the journal Behavioral and Brain Sciences. The argument is directed against the thesis that Searle calls "strong artificial intelligence" — the view that a properly programmed computer literally has a mind, in the same sense that a human being has a mind, simply by virtue of running the right program.
The thought experiment is simple. Imagine that Searle, who knows no Chinese, is placed in a room. He is given a large batch of Chinese writing and a rulebook in English that tells him how to correlate the Chinese symbols with one another — to take certain symbols as input and produce certain symbols as output according to purely formal rules, without any understanding of what the symbols mean. People outside the room pass in Chinese questions, and Searle, following the rules in the rulebook, produces Chinese answers. To the people outside, the room appears to understand Chinese perfectly — it produces fluent, intelligent responses to any question. But Searle, inside the room, understands no Chinese at all. He is merely manipulating symbols according to their shapes, without any grasp of their meaning.
The conclusion Searle draws is that symbol manipulation, no matter how sophisticated, is not sufficient for understanding. The room has the right syntax — it manipulates symbols according to rules — but it lacks semantics — it does not understand what the symbols mean. And since a computer running a program is, by definition, a system that manipulates symbols according to formal rules, no computer running a program can genuinely understand anything, no matter how intelligent its behavior appears. "Syntax is not sufficient for semantics," as Searle puts it: you cannot get meaning from purely formal symbol manipulation.
The Chinese Room has generated an enormous literature, and critics have proposed many responses. The "systems reply" argues that while Searle-the-person in the room does not understand Chinese, the system as a whole — the person plus the rulebook plus the symbols — does understand Chinese. Searle's response is that this is absurd: if the person memorizes the rulebook and internalizes the entire system, there is still no understanding, because there is still nothing it is like to understand Chinese. The "robot reply" argues that if the room were embodied in a robot that interacted with the world, the system would genuinely understand. Biological Naturalism
Searle's own positive theory of consciousness is what he calls "biological naturalism." The key idea is that consciousness is a biological phenomenon — a higher-order feature of the brain, caused by the brain's lower-level neural processes and realized in the brain's biological structure. Consciousness is not something non-physical or supernatural, and it is not something that can be reduced to or eliminated in favor of behavior, functional organization, or computational processes. It is a real, irreducible feature of the biological world, as real as digestion, photosynthesis, or lactation, and it should be studied by the same empirical methods that are used to study other biological phenomena.
Biological naturalism occupies a distinctive position in the philosophy of mind.
