Biography
David John Chalmers was born on April 3, 1966, in Sydney, Australia, into a family with strong academic and scientific interests. His father, a physician, and his mother, a cognitive scientist, provided an environment in which questions about the mind and the brain were part of everyday conversation. Chalmers showed early intellectual promise, excelling in mathematics and science at Sydney's selective North Sydney Boys High School. He displayed a particular fascination with the relationship between the mind and the physical world — a fascination that would eventually define his career but that began, like many philosophical preoccupations, with a child's sense of wonder at the fact that there is something it is like to be a conscious creature.
Chalmers entered the University of Adelaide in 1983, where he studied mathematics and computer science. These problems are "easy" not in the sense that they are trivial but in the sense that they are tractable: we know, in principle, what a solution would look like, and we have the conceptual and empirical tools to get there. The hard problem is different. It is the problem of explaining why any of these physical and computational processes should give rise to subjective experience — the felt quality of seeing red, the painfulness of pain, the what-it-is-like-ness of being a conscious creature. This problem, Chalmers argues, is not just harder than the easy problems; it is different in kind, and it requires a fundamentally new approach.
The Hard Problem of Consciousness
The hard problem of consciousness is Chalmers' most influential contribution, and it has reshaped the entire landscape of the philosophy of mind. Before Chalmers, the dominant approaches to consciousness — whether functionalist, behaviorist, or identity-theoretic — assumed that the explanation of consciousness was a matter of understanding the physical and computational mechanisms of the brain. Chalmers argued that this assumption is mistaken. No matter how completely we understand the brain's mechanisms — no matter how thoroughly we can explain how it processes information, controls behavior, and produces reports — we still face the question of why these processes are accompanied by subjective experience. The physical facts do not logically entail the phenomenal facts. We can imagine a creature that is physically and functionally identical to a human being but that has no inner experience at all — a "philosophical zombie" — and the coherence of this thought experiment shows that consciousness is something over and above the physical and functional properties of the brain.
The hard problem has profound implications for the project of naturalizing the mind. If consciousness is not logically entailed by the physical facts, then physicalism — the view that the physical facts exhaust all the facts — is false, and some form of dualism must be true. Chalmers is careful about what kind of dualism he endorses. He does not defend the Cartesian dualism of substances — the view that the mind is a non-physical substance that interacts with the physical body. Instead, he defends a form of property dualism: the view that the physical world contains both physical properties and phenomenal properties, and that phenomenal properties are fundamental features of the world that cannot be reduced to or explained in terms of physical properties. Daniel Dennett has been Chalmers' most prominent critic, arguing that the hard problem is a pseudo-problem generated by a confused philosophical picture. On Dennett's view, once we properly understand the brain's mechanisms — the multiple drafts model, the intentional stance, the user illusion of the self — the explanatory gap disappears, and there is nothing left to explain. Chalmers has responded that Dennett's approach amounts to explaining consciousness away rather than explaining it, and that the subjective quality of experience — the felt quality of seeing red, the painfulness of pain — is a datum that any adequate theory must account for, not explain away. The Zombie Argument
The philosophical zombie argument is Chalmers' most famous thought experiment, and it is the centerpiece of his case against physicalism. A philosophical zombie (or "p-zombie") is a being that is physically and functionally identical to a normal human being but that lacks conscious experience entirely. It behaves exactly as a human would — it walks, talks, reports pain when stabbed, and even discusses the mysteries of consciousness — but there is nothing it is like to be a zombie. There is no inner light, no felt quality, no subjective experience. The zombie argument proceeds in three steps. First, we can coherently conceive of a p-zombie: there is no logical contradiction in the idea of a being that is physically identical to a human but lacks consciousness. Second, what is conceivable is possible, at least in principle: if we can coherently imagine a situation, then that situation is metaphysically possible. Third, if a p-zombie is possible — if a being physically identical to a human could lack consciousness — then consciousness is not identical to, or logically entailed by, any physical or functional property. Therefore, physicalism is false.
The zombie argument has generated an enormous literature. Physicalists have challenged each of its premises. Some, like Dennett, argue that p-zombies are not genuinely conceivable — that any being physically and functionally identical to a human would necessarily be conscious, and that the apparent conceivability of zombies is an illusion generated by our limited cognitive access to the physical facts. Others, like the type-A physicalists (so called by Chalmers), argue that consciousness is a priori entailed by the physical facts, and that anyone who fully understood the physical basis of consciousness would see that consciousness must follow. Still others, like the type-B physicalists, concede that there is an explanatory gap — that we cannot derive consciousness from the physical facts a priori — but argue that this gap is merely epistemic, not metaphysical. On this view, consciousness is identical to some physical property, even though we cannot know this identity a priori, just as we cannot know a priori that water is H2O. Chalmers has responded to each of these challenges in detail, and the debate continues to drive research in the philosophy of mind.
Panpsychism
If physicalism is false and consciousness is a fundamental feature of the world, then we need a theory that explains how consciousness relates to the physical. Chalmers has explored several options, but the one he has found most promising is panpsychism — the view that consciousness is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of the natural world. On this view, elementary particles such as electrons and quarks possess rudimentary forms of conscious experience, and the complex consciousness of human beings emerges from the combination of these elementary experiences in much the same way that the mass of a macroscopic object emerges from the masses of its constituent particles.
Panpsychism has a long history in philosophy, stretching back to Aristotle and the pre-Socratics, but it has often been dismissed as implausible or even absurd. Chalmers has argued that it deserves to be taken seriously as a theoretical option, not because it is intuitively appealing but because it avoids the difficulties that plague its competitors. Dualism faces the problem of interaction: if consciousness is non-physical, how does it interact with the physical world? Physicalism faces the hard problem: how can physical processes give rise to subjective experience? Panpsychism, Chalmers argues, avoids both problems. If consciousness is already present at the fundamental level, then there is no need to explain how it emerges from the physical — it doesn't. And if consciousness is a fundamental feature of the physical world, then there is no interaction problem — consciousness and the physical are two aspects of the same underlying reality.
Chalmers acknowledges that panpsychism faces its own challenges, the most serious of which is the "combination problem": how do the rudimentary experiences of elementary particles combine to produce the unified, complex consciousness of a human being? This problem is, in a sense, the mirror image of the hard problem. The hard problem asks how consciousness emerges from the physical; the combination problem asks how complex consciousness emerges from simple consciousness. Chalmers has argued that the combination problem, while difficult, is more tractable than the hard problem, because it operates within a single domain (the phenomenal) rather than across domains (the physical and the phenomenal). Structuralism and the Meta-Problem
In his more recent work, Chalmers has turned to the question of structure. The physical sciences describe the world in terms of structural and dynamical properties — the arrangement of particles, the forces between them, the laws that govern their behavior. Consciousness, by contrast, seems to involve intrinsic, non-structural properties — the felt quality of an experience, the what-it-is-like-ness of being a conscious creature. This structural difference is, Chalmers argues, the deepest form of the explanatory gap. If the physical world is purely structural, then no amount of structural description can yield the intrinsic properties of consciousness. This insight has led Chalmers to explore the possibility that the physical world, as described by physics, is itself purely structural — that the intrinsic properties of the physical world are hidden from us behind the structural descriptions that science provides. If so, then consciousness might be the intrinsic nature of the physical world — the "inside" of the physical, as Bertrand Russell and the neutral monists suggested in the early twentieth century.
Chalmers has also framed what he calls the "meta-problem of consciousness": the problem of explaining why we think there is a hard problem of consciousness. If physicalism is true, then the hard problem should not arise — we should be able to see, at least in principle, how consciousness follows from the physical facts. The fact that the hard problem seems so compelling — that it seems obvious to most people that there is an explanatory gap — is itself a phenomenon that needs explanation. Chalmers has argued that the meta-problem is a useful diagnostic tool: any adequate theory of consciousness should be able to explain why the hard problem seems so hard, and a theory that cannot do so is incomplete.
