Biography

Hilary Whitehall Putnam was born on July 31, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, into a household where intellectual life was anything but an afterthought. His father, Samuel Putnam, was a novelist, literary critic, and translator whose English rendering of Cervantes' Don Quixote remains widely read. Imagine a planet, Twin Earth, that is molecule-for-molecule identical to Earth in every respect except one: the clear, drinkable liquid that fills Twin Earth's rivers and lakes — the stuff Twin Earthlings call "water" — is not H2O but a different chemical compound, XYZ, which is indistinguishable from water in all ordinary circumstances. Now consider an Earthling, Oscar, and his Twin Earth doppelganger, Twin Oscar, circa 1750, before the chemical composition of water was discovered. Oscar and Twin Oscar are psychologically identical: they have the same beliefs, the same dispositions, the same experiences. When Oscar thinks "water is refreshing," he is thinking about H2O. When Twin Oscar thinks "water is refreshing," he is thinking about XYZ. Despite being psychological twins, Oscar and Twin Oscar mean different things by the word "water." Therefore, Putnam concluded, meaning is not in the head — it is partly determined by the external environment.

So when the brain in a vat thinks "I am a brain in a vat," it is not thinking about actual brains and actual vats but about the simulated objects in its virtual world. The sentence "I am a brain in a vat" is, for the brain in a vat, necessarily false — not because the brain is not in a vat, but because its words do not refer to vats. The argument exploits the very externalism that Putnam had established in his earlier work: if meaning depends on causal connection to the world, then a brain that has never interacted with real vats cannot mean "vat" by its word "vat."

The world constrains our theories — we cannot simply make it up — but the world does not determine a unique correct description.
