Biography

Michael S. Gazzaniga was born on December 12, 1939, in Los Angeles, California. He studied at Dartmouth College and the California Institute of Technology, where he earned his doctorate in psychobiology in 1964 under the supervision of Roger Sperry, the pioneering neurobiologist who would later win the Nobel Prize. It was at Caltech that Gazzaniga conducted the landmark split-brain experiments that made him famous.
