Context
The Organon ("instrument" in Greek) is the traditional name for the collection of Aristotle's six logical works, assembled by his later editors under the conviction that logic is not a science but the instrument by which all sciences are conducted. The six treatises are the Categories (on the kinds of things that can be subjects and predicates), On Interpretation (on propositions and truth), the Prior Analytics (on the syllogism — the theory of deduction), the Posterior Analytics (on scientific demonstration), the Topics (on dialectical reasoning from accepted opinions), and the Sophistical Refutations (on fallacies and how to detect them). The order is pedagogical as well as logical: from the basic building blocks of thought (terms), through their combination (propositions), to their valid arrangement (arguments), and finally to their use in science, debate, and the exposure of error. Aristotle composed these works across decades, likely in dialogue with Plato, whose Academy practiced rigorous disputation, and they represent the first systematic study of valid inference in the Western tradition — the founding act of the discipline we now call logic.
Core Arguments
The Organon's central achievement is the theory of the syllogism, set out in the Prior Analytics. A syllogism is a deductive argument with two premises and a conclusion, containing exactly three terms: "All humans are mortal; Socrates is human; therefore Socrates is mortal." Aristotle shows that the validity of such arguments depends entirely on their form — on how the terms are arranged — and not on their content, and he classifies the valid forms: four figures and (traditionally) nineteen valid moods. This is the epochal insight of the Organon: reasoning can be studied as a formal structure, independent of what it is about. The Posterior Analytics extends the program to science: scientific knowledge is demonstration — conclusions derived from first principles by valid syllogisms — and the premises must be true, primary, and better known than the conclusion. The Categories supplies the ontology behind the grammar: the ten kinds of predicate (substance, quantity, quality, relation, and so on), with substance — like "Socrates" or "human" — as the primary subject. The Topics and Sophistical Refutations handle reasoning from what is generally accepted (dialectic) and the catalog of ways arguments go wrong (fallacies), including equivocation and begging the question.

Kant still called logic "the science of the necessary laws of thought," essentially the Aristotelian program. The transformation came with Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell, whose predicate logic absorbed and superseded the syllogism: Aristotle's logic is now understood as a fragment of a more general formal system. Yet the Organon's deepest insights survive — that validity is formal, that science is structured demonstration, and that the exposure of fallacies is part of the rational life. Every modern course in critical thinking and formal logic descends, consciously or not, from this collection of six small treatises.

The Organon rewards reading in its traditional order. Begin with the Categories for the groundwork — it is short and foundational, though dense. Then On Interpretation, on propositions and truth; then the Prior Analytics for the heart of the system, the syllogism; then the Posterior Analytics for the vision of science as demonstration. The Topics and Sophistical Refutations can be sampled for their practical value — the latter is the original handbook of fallacies and remains the most readable entry point for the general reader. The classic English translation is the four-volume Oxford edition by W. D. Ross; the Loeb Classical Library offers facing-text Greek-English editions. For a first pass, reading the Sophistical Refutations and the first book of the Prior Analytics gives the modern reader the core of the achievement without the scholastic apparatus.
