Context
The Prior Analytics is the third treatise of Aristotle's logical corpus, the Organon, and it is here that the discipline of logic is effectively born. Where the Categories dealt with the kinds of things that can be named and the On Interpretation with the structure of propositions, the Prior Analytics takes the decisive step upward: it treats arguments themselves as objects of study. In its opening chapter Aristotle defines the syllogism — "discourse in which, certain things being stated, something other than what is stated follows of necessity from their being so" — and then proceeds to investigate, systematically and for the first time in history, which forms of argument are valid and which are not. The work was composed in the middle decades of the fourth century BCE, within the institutional context of the Academy of Plato, where dialectical disputation was a daily discipline. Aristotle's genius was to notice that the correctness of an inference does not depend on what it is about: the pattern "All A are B; all B are C; therefore all A are C" is valid regardless of whether A, B, and C stand for animals, metals, or numbers. In isolating this purely formal dimension of reasoning, the Prior Analytics founded the science that Frege and Russell would transform two millennia later — the science of logic itself.
Core Arguments
The central achievement of the Prior Analytics is the theory of the syllogism. A syllogism is a deduction from two premises containing exactly three terms: the extremes and the middle term that links them. The premises may be universal or particular, affirmative or negative, giving four propositional forms — "All S are P," "No S are P," "Some S are P," "Some S are not P." Aristotle shows that validity depends on the figure (the position of the middle term in the premises) and the mood (the combination of propositional forms), and he identifies which combinations yield necessary inference. In the first figure the middle term is subject of one premise and predicate of the other, and its four valid moods — Barbara, Celarent, Darii, Ferio — are the perfect syllogisms to which all others are reducible. The second and third figures produce valid moods only for negative and particular conclusions respectively, and Aristotle proves their validity by reduction to the first figure through conversion and reductio ad absurdum. The result is nothing less than a decision procedure for a fragment of logic: for any syllogistic argument, one can determine mechanically whether its form guarantees its conclusion. Aristotle also acknowledges that not every inference is syllogistic — induction and argument by example fall outside the deductive core — and the Posterior Analytics extends the project by asking how the premises of scientific demonstration are themselves secured.

The first serious challenge came with the Stoics, who developed a logic of propositions rather than terms, but their work was largely lost, and the syllogism reigned as the logic until the nineteenth century. Then Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell created predicate logic, which embeds the syllogism as a fragment of a vastly more powerful system. Yet even in that transformation Aristotle's insight endured: logic studies the forms by which conclusions follow of necessity, and a small set of patterns can certify an indefinite range of arguments. Modern proof theory, model theory, and automated reasoning are all descendants of the project begun in this treatise. For the working critical thinker, the Prior Analytics remains the clearest statement ever written of what deduction is and why its validity is a matter of form rather than content.
Reading Guide
The Prior Analytics is compact but demanding. Read the first chapter carefully — its definition of the syllogism is the key to everything else — then work slowly through Book I, where the figures, moods, and reductions are developed. Chapters 4–7 present the three figures; the later chapters on modal syllogisms (necessity and possibility) are controversial and can be deferred. Book II, on imperfect syllogisms, fallacious reasoning, and the relation between syllogism, induction, and example, is more accessible and highly recommended. The standard English translation is that of A. J. Jenkinson in the Oxford Works of Aristotle; Robin Smith's translation in the Hackett edition (1989) includes an excellent introduction that modern readers will find invaluable. For a first pass, reading the definition in Chapter 1, the table of valid moods in Chapters 4–7, and the whole of Book II gives a faithful picture of the achievement. Students who want the philosophical context should pair the treatise with the Posterior Analytics and with the Categories, which supplies the ontological groundwork of terms.
